At first glance, I bet a few folks won’t love pic 1. Baby girl is like, “whoa, I’m loping out with a dude on my back!” She’s high headed and a little concerned (fair considering this is her 7th ride and first ride alone in an unfamiliar arena full of obstacles). She’s also super uphill and engaged in her hind quarters and core! Head carriage will come in time and sweet merciful Zeus, I pray that she may always travel with the poll or withers as the highest point and never her neck. Zak is doing a fantastic job of staying with her and allowing her unrestricted use of her entire body as she learns to balance herself under a rider.

2nd pic- Zak adjusts his sunglasses during a long trot through a wide turn. Sure, she’s over flexed to the inside and the diagonal pairs are a little off, but she’s mighty through and relaxed with an excellent reach and a cheerful expression. Particularly fond of her tail carriage (spinal alignment). Correct bend will come in time.

3rd pic- ooooo balance is hard! Zak reaches back to reassure Eowyn that she’s doing just fine! Something tells me that lateral movements aren’t going to be a big deal for this girl!

4th pic- Princess Eowyn, the joyful horse! While this makes for a lovely photo, she’s distracted by goings on across the street. You can see Zak is following her gaze and amused, is activating his left side in order to draw her attention back to him, which she does within milliseconds of the pic.

I married the guy so I’m clearly a little biased but hot damn, I’m a lucky gal. I’ve been around for a minute and I’ve seen some shit. There’s no one I’d rather see starting my pride and joy love of my life dream horse than my hubs. While my ego takes a beating, there’s a reason he’s up there right now and not me. 💗🍀🦄

Moving out with the saddle-

Yeah, it kinda sucks for the horse, which is exactly why we believe it’s so important. Pretty uncomfortable to feel those big, heavy stirrups banging around, the saddle bouncing all over the place and rear cinch snugged up. Uncomfortable enough to cause a serious wreck if the horse hasn’t been taught how to deal.

I can think of plenty of unintended situations where the horse might feel any or all of this- rider loses one or both stirrups, rider comes off and horse is loose, horse spooks at something and wads up while being led to the arena, rider needs to drop/adjust stirrups or girth/cinch once mounted, etc. We believe in “as little as possible as much as necessary” to ensure that the horse is confident wearing their clothes and there’s a lot of preparation that goes in to setting them up for success in this so that they have as little trouble with it as possible. #horsemanship #coltstarting #equine #equestrian #preparation #sillyfilly #irishsporthorse #blmmustang @zak_maytum
